Case “Disposition” Definition

“Cleared by Adult Arrest/Juvenile Arrest”

This disposition is used when an officer has made an arrest in a case and no additional follow-up is required. In instances where an arrest has been made and additional follow-up is needed, the case would be assigned to the Detective Unit. A juvenile is any person under the age of 18.

Cleared by Other Means”

This disposition is used when the identity of the offender is known and there is enough information to support an arrest or charge, but there is some reason outside of the police department’s control that precludes arresting, charging, and prosecuting the person. Also, this disposition applies to cases where victims refuse to cooperate if the suspect is known and to cases that are transferred to another jurisdiction for prosecution.

“Closed: All Other”

This disposition is used as an assignment code for cases that do not require any follow-up. This disposition is used to close cases only after assigned officers to the case have completed all casework (missing person, death investigation, CAR reports, Elder Abuse Reports, etc.).

“Inactive”

This disposition is used only for criminal cases in which there are no leads. This disposition applies when the assigned officer or detective has exhaused all leads and there are no further investigative steps to be taken.

“Information Only”

This disposition is used when a police report is taken for documentation purposes. This disposition applies when the facts of an incident do not meet the elements of a crime. This disposition should be used only after the officer or detective has completed all casework and follow-up.

“Pending”

This disposition is used to denote cases that are active. This dispostion applies when a case requires additional follow-up or requires some action to be taken by the officer or detective. This dispostion is used for both criminal and non-criminal matters (e.g. missing person cases).
